The Reward Structure of Mathematics: Topics in Philosophy of Mathematical Practice 2020

Like the reward structure of science, the reward structure of mathematics has benefits and drawbacks. In this talk, I focus on one such drawback: it disincentivizes mathematicians from producing exposition. I argue that this is problematic because exposition helps mathematicians to make connections between subfields, which is important to mathematical progress. I end by briefly considering two different approaches to overcoming this problem.
